About Us:
History
Kurt Heikkila developed the Tundra Companies based on new nano-technology in 2004. Since then Tundra brand composites have been used in improved, socially sound products in fishing, ballistcs, and in the automotive industries, and Tundra is still growing. Tundra is currently expanding our R&D into other market sectors including building materials, medical and industrial shielding and other sporting arenas. We have been able to accomplish all of this because of our unique flat organizational structure and innovative associates.
Culture
At Tundra we have a flat organization with a strong commitment to a mentorship process. We promote leadership within and outside of our organization as a primary value in our management process. Every associate has valued ideas that drive the innovative spirit of Tundra. Each person on a project has input. At Tundra we talk face-to-face to create an atmosphere of trust that allows everyone's ideas to be heard. At Tundra we create prototypes in a rigorous hands on approach for every product that we develop. All of the parts of our corporate culture help us achieve our goals as a cohesive whole, and drives Tundra forward.
Core Technology
Tundra's founder Kurt Heikkila has a history of innovative practices that have focused upon technologies in a variety of consumer industries. Successful experimentation and product developments have produced and honed a core competency in unique nano-level particle technology configurations. He found that by coating particles with particular compounds they could create composites with more densely packed particles than previously produced. This gives Tundra the ability to make materials that are highly dense and ultra light. Our technology works with polymers, ceramics, metal powders, glass, organic and inoraganic materials. The combination of interfacial modifier technology and our experience in forming, compounding, and extrusion leads us to produce materials that have increased flexibility, elongation, conductivity, malleability and products that are more impact and heat resistant. A core value commitment to resource management, environmental and consumer health and economic product viability has focused Tundra upon its initial and continuing priority of replacing lead in its many applications worldwide. This focus has produced the initial usage range of Tundra lead replacement materials in the automotive (wheel weights) and fishing (jigs and sinkers) industries. Current activities include ballistics for the hunting industries and products for the construction industry.
The Tundra Advantage
Using Tundra’s interfacial modifier technology we have developed new materials. These materials can be used in existing processes such as injection molding and extrusion or new processes like melt molding applications. The combination of new materials and different processes gives Tundra increased design flexibility. This new flexibility includes a continuum of density, recreating old products with new ideas, and duel density applications. All of these applications create products that are more socially sound.
Mission Statement
The Tundra Companies are devoted to synthesizing innovation through leveraging technology, social and cultural factors, and design into solutions which positively impact consumers and the environment.
